TIPS ON PLANTS

Carefully read the 'Care Cards' Enigma provides for each specific type of plant.

HOUSE PLANTS:
  • Inspect them before you buy make sure that the plants are well potted and none of the stems are broken.
  • With plants left outside, make sure the leaves are not burned and the plant is well watered.
  • Most plants prefer to dry out a little between thorough watering.
  • Water from below - stand them in a dish of water until all the water has been taken up. Feed regularly to keep them healthy.
  • Remember to use the correct plant food for flowering/foliage plants
  • Plants that like high humidity need regular, preferably daily misting; stand them in a saucer of damp pebbles to encourage additional localised humidity.
  • Give broad glossy leaves an occasional wipe with a cloth
  • Pinching out the tips of some houseplants can encourage them to grow bushier; keeping flowering plants slightly pot bound makes them flower more.
  • Avoid strong heat or chilly draughts. Many houseplants like to be outdoors during the U.A.E's cooler months but remember desert nights can be too cold for your house plants.
  • Check your plants regularly for signs of stress, pests or disease. Remove dead leaves and flowers as they occur.
CACTUS:
  • When you bring the plant home most of the time it is in a small pot and it probably has grown there for a long time so consider repotting.
  • Most cacti like several small feedings so a time release type of fertilizer will feed the plant for six or more months.
  • In the house, place the plant near a bright lighted window, where it will receive light most of the day.
  • On the balcony, place the cactus in a partly shaded area until it becomes accustom to the sun. Never bring the cactus home and place it in bright sunlight, cacti sunburn just like people.
  • Cacti in pots require more care in watering. Depending on where they come from, the plant should not be allowed to go completely dry, just moist.
  • In the house watering could be as little as once a month depending on the dryness of the house.
  • Outside, water every two or three days.
  • To test if it's time to water, take a wooden pencil and place it down through the soil to the bottom of the pot, when removed, if damp soil is on it don't water.
